Teen star's pregnancy underscores dangers of abstinence-only sex-education in Florida

By now everyone knows Jamie Lynn Spears, the 16-year-old star of television's "Zoey 101" and sister of train wreck pop star Britney, is pregnant.

She could be the anti-poster child for the Bush administration's failed abstinence-only sex education programs.

With more states declining an abstinence-only approach to sex education, Florida remains a big promoter of abstinence education, even as new studies show the emphasis is failing to keep many kids from having sex.

Florida isn't wrong to make abstinence outside of marriage the "expected standard" in sex education. Teen sex rates were on the decline for a decade before hitting a plateau in 2001, and the message of abstinence - whether it comes from parents, teachers or peers - deserves some credit.

Washington, DC – Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA) President Cecile Richards praised New Mexico health officials today for rejecting federal funding for ineffective abstinence-only programs that deny teenagers potentially lifesaving information about prevention and responsible decision making. New Mexico, the 15th state to reject the funding, has pledged to teach comprehensive, medically accurate sex education.

Twenty-thousand more babies were born to teenagers in 2006 than in 2005. The increase in the teen birth rate was the first in 15 years - proof, obviously, that abstinence-only education is working.

ISSUE: Teen birth rate rises for the first time in 15 years.

U.S. health officials were reportedly stunned by the news, and at a loss to explain it.

But for the more plugged-in experts, the dismaying rise in the teen birth rate in America is just the latest symptom of a failed sex eduction program that has increasingly relied on abstinence-only teachings.

What is it going to take before the nation grasps the reality that giving hormone-raging youngsters limited information on how to avoid pregnancy and disease just doesn't cut it?
