Urge Governor Crist to reject Title V and apply for PREP

Now is the time to stop the state from squandering precious tax dollars and help protect Florida teens by telling Governor Crist to reject Title V funding for abstinence-only programs and apply for PREP funding!  It's time that Florida recognize the harm in providing teens with misinformation and half truths by rejecting federal abstinence-only funding, and applying for PREP dollars that would teach our teens medically-accurate, age-appropriate and comprehensive sex education.

Governor Crist has until August 30th to reject Title V and apply for PREP.  Contact him today!

Florida's youth continue to experience some of the worse health outcomes in the U.S, despite our state receiving the 2nd highest amount of federal abstinence-only funding in the country. Abstinence-only programs have been proven ineffective in delaying sexual activity and put young people at risk.  And our teens are paying the price.

Did you know?

  • Florida ranks highest in the nation in cases of HIV infection diagnosed in the U.S.  In 2007, there were a total of 3,982 new cases of HIV infection diagnosed.
  • Florida also has the 3rd highest rate of AIDS cases nationwide.
  • Additionally Florida ranks 12th highest in the nation in teen births.  Between 2005 and 2006, while the national average increased 3 percent, Florida's teen birth rate increased by 7 percent from a rate of 42.4 births in 2005 to 45.2 births in 2006 per 1,000 young women aged 15–19.

A 2009 national report by the Sexuality Information and Education Council of the United States and the Healthy Teens Campaign revealed that Florida’s abstinence-only until marriage programs provide inaccurate and outdated information, reinforce gender stereotypes, and rely on fear and shame-based tactics to discourage sexual activity.

Our state can do better!  Urge Governor Crist to apply for PREP funding before it's too late!
Or you can also call the Governor at 850-488-4441.

Overwhelming evidence reveals these programs are ineffective, medically inaccurate, and harmful to girls and young women. Urge Governor Crist to reject Title V today!
