One in four teen girls have STDs

As many as one in four U.S. teenage girls have had a sexually transmitted disease (STD), many infected soon after their first sexual encounter, a new government report shows.

"The high burden of STDs among teen girls reminds us that we can't ignore this," said study author Dr. Sami L. Gottlieb, from the division of sexually transmitted disease prevention at the U.S. Centers for Disease and Prevention.

New campaign aims to combat alarming Florida STD rates

According to Planned Parenthood of North Central Florida, there are around 1,669 cases of chlamydia, 724 gonorrhea cases and 84 new HIV cases every year in Leon County alone. In hopes of battling alarming rates of sexually transmitted infections and diseases, Planned Parenthood has teamed up with MTV and the Kaiser Family Foundation to launch the Get Yourself Tested campaign.

Teens Have 70% Of STDs Locally, Statistics Show

Sexually transmitted disease rates are soaring in the Tampa Bay area, with more than 70 percent of the cases among 15- to 19-year-olds.

At least 3 percent of all teens 15 and older in Hillsborough and Pinellas counties had an STD in 2007, more than twice the historically low rates of the early 1990s, according to Florida Department of Health records.
