Thoughts On Roe at 37

This morning, as I updated my Facebook status to celebrate the 37th anniversary of Roe v. Wade with a message about how thankful I was that I have the right to make personal decisions about my body, I would never have guessed how many anti-choice comments I would receive -  and from my friends and family no less! 

January 22, 2010: 37 Years of Roe

On January 22, 1973, the U.S. Supreme Court handed down its landmark decision, Roe v. Wade, recognizing the constitutional right to privacy and a woman’s right to choose abortion. Many of us don’t recall the deadly days before Roe when abortions were illegal and "choice" for too many women meant a dangerous back-alley procedure.

What's the latest on Health Care Reform?

As you know, we have been working tirelessly to ensure that women are not worse off after health care reform than they are today. Need proof? Check out the inspiring video above of our Florida supporters who joined over 1,300 others from across the nation in Washington DC for the Day of Action and delivered over 385,000 petitions!  We know you have questions on the abortion language in the Senate version of the bill. Anti-Choice Health Care Reform Amendment Failed to Pass the Senate!

Great news!!! On December 8th, the Senate voted on the anti-choice Nelson/Hatch amendment to health care reform, and we won! Unlike the Stupak amendment that passed the House of Representatives, this amendment did not pass the Senate!

We called for a day of action to stop the Stupak abortion ban and that's exactly what we got! Like me, hundreds of activists from across the country flooded the U.S. Capitol today with one mission in mind -- to pass health care reform and to ensure that the anti-choice abortion ban, known as the Stupak amendment, is not part of the health care reform bill.

Back To School Reality Check

It’s that time of year – the transition from summer vacation to the rigors of back-to-school time. In middle and high schools across Florida, teens are packing up their backpacks and preparing for study sessions, pop quizzes and homework as part of the 2009-2010 school year.  With the national health care reform debate dominating the news, and a focus on preventive health care – there is no greater time to start the conversation about the urgent need to ensure that our teens have all the information that they need to stay healthy and safe.
